Whispers

A sunset with a temple in the background.

Shadows speak when all is still

As day’s end comes to a close

Carried on a gentle breeze

Through valleys of ruin

and hills of old

Long they slumbered out of sight

Out of time where no one knows

Still as in death they lie

Their voices unheard

And stories untold

On a darkened and wayward path

In a land where nothing grows

There in silence they whisper

To weary travelers

On the road

Across the plains far and wide

And in the depths of despair

Over mountain’s mighty peaks

And in the lands of nightmare

Beyond darkness of the night

Beyond light of sun’s glare

There could be heard

Faint whispers

Faint whispers in the air

Echoes of empires built on lies

A King crowned only to depose

By false Kings and Queens

On thrones of greed

In cities of gold

Through the rise and the falls

In its birth and death throes

They call to the masses

Of arrogant bliss

As end tolled

They cry out unto deafened ears

Of a people who seek to oppose

The rule of the righteous

To which death

Was bestowed

Across the plains far and wide

And in the depths of despair

Over mountain’s mighty peaks

And in the lands of nightmare

Beyond darkness of the night

Beyond light of sun’s glare

There could be heard

Faint whispers

Faint whispers in the air

Self-destruction and vanity

Paths of ruin without sorrows

False idols led the charge

As the masses

blindly followed

Light has ceased to shine upon

Barren lands where no wind blows

A final cry of distress

As waters of life

No longer flowed

Shadows speak at the end of time

When there is nothing but echoes

Carried in the emptiness

Of a world in ruin

And endless cold

Across the vast empty plains

And in the depths of despair

Over mountain’s lonely peaks

And in the lands of nightmare

Beyond darkness of the night

Beyond light in the faded air

There still could be heard

Faint whispers

Faint whispers in the air

Author’s Note:

It took me longer than usual to write this, as I had other things going on.  I’m happy to finally put this up, even though we’re already halfway through January.  I hope you all like this piece.

Can you hear the whispers?
